Despite the drought, UC Davis couldn't capitalize leading by just two. Long Beach State jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first 2:33, but then scored just eight points over the next 13:31. UC Davis' Joe Harden (20 points) missed the Aggies first free throw before making the second all but securing a Long Beach State win. Ware stepped to the line and calmly made his two free throws to put LBSU up 60-55. Both teams would shoot two free throws and UC Davis would get the ball with 4.1 seconds to play. Before Ware could go to the line, the officials viewed the television replay and ruled that Ware had also committed an intentional foul for swinging his elbows, a new rule instituted in college basketball this year. They inbounded it to Casper Ware who was fouled by Ryan Sypkens. Long Beach State didn't lock it up until there was four seconds to play on an unusual play. The Aggies outscored LBSU 21-10 in the final 6:29 of the game. Things got ugly for The Beach from there. UC Davis (6-11, 1-5 Big West) snapped the streak with a bucket by Alex Tiffen, but Larry Anderson answered with a conventional three-point play to give LBSU its biggest lead at 50-35.
LBSU scored 14 straight points over the next 5:24 to push the lead to 47-33 with nine minutes to play. The two teams were tied, 33-33, when the 49ers made their run. The 49ers battled the Aggies with neither team leading by more than six until midway through the second half. Larry Anderson and Casper Ware added 12 points apiece and Greg Plater had 11 points. Eugene Phelps led the Niners with 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. The 49ers (10-8, 5-0 BWC) won their fifth straight game, the longest winning streak for LBSU since it won the first five games of Big West play during the 2008-09 season. Long Beach State used a 14-0 run midway through the second half to build a 15-point lead and then held on to claim a 60-56 Big West Conference win over UC Davis Wednesday night at the Walter Pyramid.
